• Located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, Rome refers to two things. It is both a province located in the Lazio region of Italy and the capital city of that region (and of Italy itself). Founded in 753 BC, Rome is one of the oldest continuously-populated cities in Europe. Referred to as 'The Eternal City', it was the capital city of the Roman Empire in ancient times and is considered to be one of the birthplaces of Western civilization.
