References, mentions, and inside jokes in the season 1 of Young Hercules that support the canon of the season. Basically, when one episode mentions an event happening in another. (For support of the canon outside the movie/tv series, see Nod to HtLJ and X:WP. For non-support of the canon, see Continuity Warning.) For the purposes of this page, we're ignoring obvious multi-part episodes, like 1.01 - Treasure of Zeus/1.02 - Between Friends/1.03 - What a Crockery, 1.11 - Battle Lines I/1.12 - Battle Lines II, and 1.19 - Lure of the Lyre/1.20 - Fame/1.21 - Lyre, Liar/1.22 - A Lady in Hades, since obviously they mention each other, and focusing on the more subtle references.
1.01 - Treasure of Zeus
- Hercules and Iolaus's lines, "Expect the unexpected", is a reference to Cheiron's advice in the Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), "Always anticipate the unexpected."
- As the boys race out of the cave, being chased by a fireball, they remember to jump over the spike-pit trap that Iolaus had triggered on their way in. This is a detail that could have easily been overlooked or forgotten, and I'm glad it was not!
1.02 - Between Friends
- When Iolaus is instructing Nysus Gaius, he tells him that "Balance is the key." This is a reference to Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), when Iolaus is sparring against Hercules and Jason gives them the same advice.
- When Iolaus is instructing Nysus Gaius on the pole exercises at the Academy, he tells him that he's seen Hercules do the same exercise blindfolded. This could be a reference to Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), where Hercules trains at night privately with Cheiron.
1.06 - Teacher's Pests
- At the end of the ep, Jason steals Iolaus's tip with a "You owe me," to which Iolaus replies, "For-Oh, Kora's." which is probably a reference to that time in 1.02 - Between Friends when Jason paid for Iolaus's meal and Iolaus said he owed Jason one.
1.08 - Keeping Up With the Jasons
- The subtle exchange between Jason and Iolaus ("He knows how much I miss my father." "Yeah, we all do.") is a reference to Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), when King Aeson died.
1.13 - Forgery
- When Iolaus approaches Kora's window, he calls his "horse" Tabert. Rob Tapert is one of the executive producers of the show.
1.15 - Ares on Trial
- After finding out that Iolaus chose the wrong answer for a test question, Hercules says, "Listen, next time we'll study together, all right?". He fulfills this promise in the episode 1.32 - Cram-Ped, when he rounds up the other cadets to help Iolaus study.
1.22 - A Lady in Hades
- Once in the Elysian Fields, Jason takes the chance to reunite with his father King Aeson. King Aeson died in Young Hercules (Movie Pilot).
1.29 - Sisters
- Kora mentions that she's tried bands before, and they didn't work. This may be a reference to Orpheus's concert in 1.20 - Fame when the very popular concert became infested with Bacchae, causing mass panic as everyone ran for their lives, and possibly leaving Kora's Inn with some bad publicity.
