References, mentions, foreshadowing, and inside jokes in the season 1 of Young Hercules that support the canon of the season. Basically, when one episode mentions an event happening in another. (For support of the canon outside the movie/tv series, see Nod to HtLJ and X:WP. For non-support of the canon, see Continuity Warning.) For the purposes of this page, we're ignoring obvious multi-part episodes, like 1.01 - Treasure of Zeus/1.02 - Between Friends/1.03 - What a Crockery, 1.11 - Battle Lines I/1.12 - Battle Lines II, and 1.19 - The Lure of the Lyre/1.20 - Fame/1.21 - Lyre, Liar/1.22 - A Lady in Hades, since obviously they mention each other, and focusing on the more subtle references.
1.01 - Treasure of Zeus
- Hercules and Iolaus's lines, "Expect the unexpected", is a reference to Cheiron's advice in the Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), "Always anticipate the unexpected."
- As the boys race out of the cave, being chased by a fireball, they remember to jump over the spike-pit trap that Iolaus had triggered on their way in. This is a detail that could have easily been overlooked or forgotten, and I'm glad it was not!
1.02 - Between Friends
- When Iolaus is instructing Nysus Gaius, he tells him that "Balance is the key." This is a reference to Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), when Iolaus is sparring against Hercules and Jason gives them the same advice.
- When Iolaus is instructing Nysus Gaius on the pole exercises at the Academy, he tells him that he's seen Hercules do the same exercise blindfolded. This could be a reference to Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), where Hercules trains at night privately with Cheiron.
1.03 - What a Crockery
- Alcmene telling The Traveling Stranger that he "must have a way with dogs" is an inside joke - Ares is definitely a dog person, and has a pet dog named Graegus who eats the bodies of dead soldiers.
1.06 - Teacher's Pests
- At the end of the ep, Jason steals Iolaus's tip with a "You owe me," to which Iolaus replies, "For-Oh, Kora's." which is probably a reference to that time in 1.02 - Between Friends when Jason paid for Iolaus's meal and Iolaus said he owed Jason one.
1.08 - Keeping Up With the Jasons
- The subtle exchange between Jason and Iolaus ("He knows how much I miss my father." "Yeah, we all do.") is a reference to Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), when King Aeson died.
1.13 - Forgery
- When Iolaus approaches Kora's window, he calls his "horse" Tapert. Rob Tapert is one of the executive producers of the show.
1.14 - No Way Out
- Hercules mentions that Lilith "already won the Daccuda" - this is a reference to 1.08 - Keeping Up With the Jasons when Lilith wins the Daccuda (an award for the student demonstrating the highest ideals of the academy).
1.15 - Ares on Trial
- After finding out that Iolaus chose the wrong answer for a test question, Hercules says, "Listen, next time we'll study together, all right?". He fulfills this promise in the episode 1.32 - Cram-Ped, when he rounds up the other cadets to help Iolaus study.
1.22 - A Lady in Hades
- Once in the Elysian Fields, Jason takes the chance to reunite with his father King Aeson. King Aeson died in Young Hercules (Movie Pilot).
1.29 - Sisters
- In 1.10 - Cyrano de Hercules, Jason and Hercules were giving tips to Hephaestus on how to talk to girls. One of their tips was a drawn-out "Hello". The first thing the boys do when they see Cleo? "Well, hellooooo...."
- Kora mentions that she's tried bands before, and they didn't work. This may be a reference to Orpheus's concert in 1.20 - Fame when the very popular concert became infested with Bacchae, causing mass panic as everyone ran for their lives, and possibly leaving Kora's Inn with some bad publicity.
1.36 - Hind Sight
- After hearing about the Golden Hind, the next few lines reveal an insight into the motivation behind each character: Jason thinks about the fame, Iolaus speculates about the market value of the hide, and Hercules thinks about impressing his father. This harkens back to 1.01 - Treasure of Zeus when the guys go after Zeus's Chalice - Jason is the one who mentions that Herc is keeping the glory to himself, Iolaus says that he cares about the treasure and not the glory, and Hercules is only interested in the Chalice and impressing his father.
1.37 - The Head That Wears The Crown
- Ram's head motifs are found twice on Jason's coronation robes. There is one in the center of his crown and the second is in the form of the pin that holds his cloak on. In Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), he and the others go to retrieve the Golden Fleece, a solid gold ram's pelt.
1.39 - The Skeptic
- In the beginning of the episode, Hercules is practicing alone with a blindfold. This harkens back to the Young Hercules (Movie Pilot) where Hercules continues to practice when the gym is empty, and Cheiron ups the stakes by making him perform the exercise blindfolded. Cheiron also makes cadets fight blindfolded in 1.08 - Keeping Up With the Jasons.
