The River of Skulls is the second obstacle that one must get past to get into the Cave of Ares. It gets its name from the many skeletons that can be seen in the acid-rich water. In both the movie and the novelization, Hercules's torch slips out of his hands and into the river, where it immediately is reduced to nothing.
