Iolaus and Hercules have known each other their whole lives, but were not always close friends (Young Hercules (Movie Pilot))
Iolaus grew up as a thief, and ran with the Lowacks - one of the most dangerous gangs around. (1.04 Herc and Seek)
When Iolaus was caught, he was given the option to go to jail or go to Cheiron's Academy. Although he chose the Academy, Iolaus continues to struggle to pass the exams and earn enough money to pay tuition. (1.02 Between Friends, 1.32 Cram-Ped)
