Pandora's Box

• According to the Greek poet Hesiod, Pandora was the first human woman created by the gods, all of whom provided her with various gifts (Athena gave her clothing, Aphrodite made her extremely beautiful, etc). After Prometheus stole fire, however, Zeus sent Pandora to Earth as a gift to Epimetheus (Prometheus' brother). With her, the king of the gods also sent a large jar that she was not to open under any circumstances. Because of her curiosity, though, Pandora ended up opening the jar anyway. From it spilled forth all of the greatest evils now known to man. By the time she was able to close the jar again, only one thing was left inside- Elpis, the spirit of Hope.
