Balian has been working as the captain of the guards since before Jason was even born, having served under King Aeson first. He is a very stern man who seems not to trust Jason's judgement at times. He is not above taking matters into his own hands when he feels it needs to be done (such as having Hercules arrested for what he mistook as an assault on the future king), but he seems to have the best interests of both Jason and the kingdom at heart.
